Daniel Ambrose answers:

Alex:

You and I are lucky since we have a Cabela’s nearby. Not everyone is so fortunate. The relatively short trip to Olympia (actually, Lacey), is worth it. It’s a fantastic store. It’s like a big mall (or candy store). The fishing sections are great…from inexpensive to top of the line. There’s a great selection of salmon gear.

I don’t know about you but for some purchases, I like to actually hold the items to contrast them. In my opinion, the store people at Cabela’s are knowledgeable and helpful. I guess because of our proximity to Puget Sound and the Pacific, this includes salt water gear and knowledge.

The store policies are great too. Last year, I bought a Daiwa Luna Model 300 reel. It was several weeks before I got to try it. I discovered I really needed the Model 203 with a narrower spool. They exchanged it, no questions asked. The receipt said, “Customer changed his mind.”

I suppose it’s not a major consideration but they have a great popcorn stand outside.

I found it a little tricky to get to even though it’s right off I-5. There are a couple of “round abouts” that still confuse me enough that I’m careful so I don’t wind up “exploring” nearby neighborhoods.

I’ll include a link so you can see the store, look at it’s inventory, and get directions if needed.

However, when I’m on the road fishin’, I think it’s important to support the local guys. So, I’ll find a local tackle shop for my supplies.

Happy shoppin’ and fishin’

The type of hat you mention is called a bucket hat. Look on ebay for a vintage one. Otherwise plenty of places sell bucket or bucket fishing hats.

http://www.e4hats.com/_e/gdept/16/Fishing_Sports_Hat.htm

I have used a Tilley (T3) hat for over ten years as my fishing and generall outside hat. Made and designed in Canada, foam in the crown so it floats if you loose it. It has a lifetime warranty. I just had the original hat I bought tear and they replaced it for free, no questions asked. I beat the heck out of that hat and felt naked when it was gone. Had a new one within a week!No pockets on the band though. I might recomend a fleece hat band so you can stick the hooks in, like a fly drying patch.

These can be ordered on line from many places.

http://www.cabelas.com/ssubcat-1/cat110002.shtml

This store has lots of Toronto locations, and one of their hats might fit your needs, although I would rather order another brand online if I could.

If you’re willing to spend good money for a rod and reel that will last 10+years get a shimano symetre reel that holds 10-14 lb. Test and a medium berkley lightning rod. This combo has great feel and sensitivity. That will run you around $100. This is an all around great combo for anything such as walleye, bass, pike, etc. As for tackle – walleye like live bait so you could get 1/4 oz. Jigheads, bass and pike like spinnerbaits, and lipless crankbaits as well as live bait. Cabelas has the reel on sale.

Http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0023116118273a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=shimano+spinning+reel&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=shimano+spinning+reel&noImage=0

If you’re looking to spend less than that, get a pre-rigged medium weight spinning rod/reel combo at any local sporting goods store.

I hope they’re biting.

Whether your an avid sport fisherman, or someone who just enjoys fishing as a hobby, finding the right fishing gear, such as which fishing pole is right for catching Carp, Catfish, or Trout, is important and can drastically reduce the learning curve and allow you to catch more fish.

When you shop for your fishing pole try to first ascertain the type of fish your wanting to catch and it can also be helpful to know where your choice can be caught in the area your planning to fish. My being born in Indianapolis, Indiana, I found the most common fish caught was Carp, and I enjoyed the fight they would put up. But I have also fished in Florida, where I have had some other great challenges, such as the pike, and again, I cannot stress enough the need to have the best possible fishing gear for the type of fishing you are planning.

I chose fishing poles in this post because that was what I was asked for. I try to post whatever my readers ask me for, within reason and about fishing. So fishing poles it is.

Did we just say we were going to expose the sport fishing pole? Provocative! But just how does one go about exposing a sport fishing pole? Do you somehow suppose there is something hidden about these poles?

Get your head out of the gutter. Our idea of exposing the sport fishing pole is to show the suttle, yet important, differences between the Sportsmans fishing pole, and the Hobbyist fishing pole. For the sake of curiosity lets just read this short post and see where it is going to go.

Whether you are the sportsman or the hobbyist, you are going to find this article revealing and possibly even informative. So without further ado lets get started.

Many fishermen, I have discovered, are just hobbyist. Not to say they are a lesser individual, but they are less concerned about their fishing gear, poles included, than the full out sportsman. They use whatever fishing gear they can get their hands on, and do not much care about the makers of the gear. They fish to fish and leave the fancy stuff to the “expert” fishermen.

On the other hand, the “expert” fishermen are extremely fanatical – some would say, about the poles they use, as well as the other fishing gear. The name on the gear really has little to do with the professionals choice of gear, including their sport fishing pole.

They choose their gear for things like craftsmanship and quality of product. The name on the gear may only factor in if the sportsman knows that names only going to be placed on quality products. Then the name can take a part in the sports fisherman’s choosing of a fishing pole.

If you feel this post is leaving out something important you can do one of two things. 1) you can leave me a comment down below or, 2) you can check back and see if I have continued this post in a new post.

Fishing tackle is needed for the thousands of new fishermen who choose to begin fishing for the first time every year. A common question they all have is what fishing tackle do I need to get started. Here are a few things to keep in mind when your first starting out as a beginner hobby fisherman.

The first thing you want to determine is how serious are you about fishing as a hobby. Many people have never done it before so they need to consider this as they prepare to make their early purchases, because they cannot be certain if it will be something they will want to continue.

With this in mind you will want to set a budget on how much money you spend on what you need to begin fishing. You certainly do not need to be investing a large sum of money for something you may not continue to do.

Some would suggest that you start your fishing tackle with the absolute bare minimum until you determine how serious you are about your newly chosen fishing hobby.

Following this philosophy you would simply purchase some fishing line, a bobber that shows when there is action on your line, a sinker to give your line some weight, and a hook where you place your bait. Whenever fish take the bait you will see action in the bobber, and this is an exciting time for the new fisherman.

If your not Huckleberry Fin, and do not want to begin this wonderful sport looking like an eight year old, unless you are an eight year old – which then it is fine, you may not choose to begin fishing with such a simple kit. A quality fishing pole, and beginner tackle boxes, with pre-selected fishing tackle, can be purchased at almost any sporting goods store, or retail outlet, at a very reasonable price.

Once you have come to enjoy this wonderful sport and learned many of the techniques for the types of fish you have targeted, you can easily upgrade your fishing tackle and improve your skills as you improve your gear.

Have you got an ungodly amount of bass fishing lures? I mean really, just how many bass fishing lures does it take? Recently, a friend and I were doing a little bass fishing and this is how these things get started.

It was a peaceful sunny day at the back of my friends twenty acres where we were just getting started bass fishing in his private lake, when my friend pulled out this huge tackle box from his pickup and started fingering through all these different bass fishing lures.

Now I looked at my friend and then the massive quantity of bass fishing lures he had displayed and I could not help but ask him, “are you going to open a bass fishing lure shop?” He looked at me, just a little dumbfounded, in my opinion, and said “you never know what them varmints are going to take a notion to strike at.”

Now who in the world talks like that? I laughed until I nearly cried, and then I asked my friend “if you had used all of the bass fishing lures you had in your tackle box, why did you not just get rid of the lures that did not catch any bass?

He responded; “maybe they were not hungry that day.”

Now I kid you not, there is something to be said about the honesty in which he truly believed himself to be responding to my questions, and folks, we are not in Tennessee, not that I have anything against Tennesseans, but who in the state of Indiana, born and raised, talks like that?

But lets find the moral of our little story; “how many bass fishing lures does it take?” Well, I do not claim to know how many bass fishing lures it takes, but I will say that if your spending thirty minutes sifting through them to find the perfect bass fishing lure, the bass may eat their fill before you ever get your line into the water. Hence, another day they may not of been hungry. I know this may seem silly, but I could not resist sharing it with you.

And, for my friend, who will remain anonymous, I meant you no disrespect, just remember that I write about the things I love, so you know I love you. <img src='http://sportfishinghobby.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt="icon smile How many bass fishing lures does it take?

Carp fishing is such a different kind of fishing that it is recommended that you talk directly to an expert to get specific tips, especially in regards to cleaning and preparation for eating the carp. However, we will list some things here for you to keep in mind if you are interested in carp fishing as a hobby sport.

Carp fishing requires special gear that is different than other types of fishing gear. For starters you will use a specialized small tent to sit in while you are waiting for the fish to bite, because carp fishing is often done in the winter months and the tent offers you protection from the outside weather

This tent should be large enough to move around in comfortably yet easily set up for use, then re-packed for easy transfer from site to site.

The fishing gear for carp fishing is so specific to carp fishing that it is best to be purchased at a specialized carp fishing store. This includes purchasing a rod, hooks and bait that you will use to fish with.

Fishing for carp will require that you purchase quality gear that will hold up to the special requirements of this sport. Below is a list of specialized equipment that is handy to have which includes:

- forceps
- bait needle
- binoculars
- super glue
- sharpened scissors
- degorgers
- bait drill
- gardener loop tying device
- sink tubing
- cork balls
- splicing needle
- imitation bait

Google search the items listed above for a full explanation on what each does and why you need them.

Carp fishing is a sport that requires a certain mind set, but as a hobby can be a fun relaxing way to spend your free time. It is easy to set up for and can be done anywhere carp are found.

Just keep in mind that carp fishing although enjoyable does require some special knowledge especially about cleaning them for consumption. But do not be deterred by this as it is very simple to learn and the end result is a delicious one.
