Your Questions About Sport Fishing Boats

Sharon asks…
SoCal Sport fishing Boats?
Ok, so tomorrow I am going on a 3/4 day fishing trip. The boat has enough reservations to go. However, the forecast calls for 4-5 foot swells at 12 seconds, 7 knot winds, and maybe some rain. I know light rain rarely stops a trip from going, but I am worried about the swell. My question is what is that maximum swell a typical SoCal Sport fishing boat will go in?
Thanks!!

Daniel Ambrose answers:
7 knot wind is not that bad.
4 to 5 feet swells every 12 seconds is choppy enough to give some people seasickness. But it will also help improve fish bites a little. Detecting small or bottom bites will be slightly more difficult though. You’ll also need to use heavier sinkers and heavier lures. Other than these, there’s little to worry about. 4-5 feet swells/12 seconds will not stop charter boat captains.
Your main concern is the rain. Many captains will not go out in the rain. You better call the docks before you go.

Sandy asks…
What kind of boat should I buy in Hawaii for sport fishing?
I’m moving to back to Hawaii soon, and want to puschase a sports fishing boat. What is the best type of boat? Sea Ray Cruiser? Cruisers? Sportcrafts? Can someone please give me some advise, I’m disabled so I need to buy a reasonable priced 30-40 ft sports fishing boat, and I would like to live on the boat, sometimes to get away from society out side stress. NOTE: The boat must be for salt water use only….

Daniel Ambrose answers:
What island will you be on? Slips and mooring space are virtually non-existent in HI. Be sure you have secured a place to keep your boat before you go out and buy something. Most of the marinas in HI are state owned and are beyond dilapidated. There are a few private marinas that I think are almar properties. My experience with almar is not good and I would avoid them if at all possible. They have rules on top of rules to enforce the rules that they use to control you. That said, if you can find the space you need, then find the boat that suits your needs. Remember fuel is really spendy in the 808 state so a small diesel would be wise. Unless you are going far offshore and want to get there in a hurry and your bucket of money is bottomless.

Lisa asks…
Great sport fishing boats just a few minutes from costaricadreams.com why are there so many boats not fishing?
We just came back from Jaco Costa Rica. We found a small cluster of sportfishing boats near costaricadreams.com they are great boats with big savings and excellent service. we went out on the 34 ft diamante a 10 ft beam , lots of cover. we hooked up 7 rooster fish. the full day cost us $ 695.00 We asked some of the bigger companies. The price were much higher. I understand overhead , Is there a rule of thumb for price of the sizes of boats. Or is all based on top shelf advertising ? anyone know. I love fishing with people who tell you how it is. We have been put on a list to stay informed as to when the fish are hitting. are there fishing reports , that are not a booking agency ? I want a straight answers. Also I saw and heard on the marine radio , these big boats breaking down , getting skunked. When you pay thousands of dollars , do you get your money back. Or do you just stay away from the older boats ? costaricafishingdeals.com booked us. It was super, a small water taxi took us out to a mooring, nice crew. fish. They said they would rather stay in if the fishing is not great. they also said they could suggest good boats from the beach & marina. Do you think that these bigger fleets will survive ? it certtainly looked like a slow year, I am going back again this year since I was able to shop a good deal.
mack d thanks

Daniel Ambrose answers:
Sport fishing and travel are both hurting during this economic crisis.. I note there was no funds for this in the recent economic stimulus bill. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal, and caught some fish…..i recommend that you use the booking agent you trust, and have a good trip. The Big boats will have to adjust if they want to survive…..

Jenny asks…
what is a good website for used sport fishing boats?

Daniel Ambrose answers:
Iboats.com is a good place.

William asks…
If you go fishing on a sport fishing boat and catch a 30 pound tuna – how much meat do you take home?
what I am trying to ask is how much of a fish’s weight is lost when you have the boat fillet the fish for you? Is it better to take the whole fish home and do it yourself?
I love fish. Yum. I don’t want to catch and release. I want to bring home as much as possible, but I have never filleted a large fish before.

Daniel Ambrose answers:
If you know how to fillet a fish it’s always better to do it yourself. I saw someone catch a 30# Red Drum and she had the fish cleaner fillet it for her. She went home with much less fish than she should have. Fish cleaners charge by the pound and they weigh it before they clean it. Some cleaners are better than others, but I trust my own skill much better.
Really it all depends on the cleaner. I would guess that for a 30 pound fish you would probably take home 15-18 pounds at the most with a good cleaner. You’ll loose a lot just from the guts, bones, and head.
Sometimes, for some people, it’s just less hassle to let them do the dirty work.
Good luck! Hope this helps!

Salmon Fishing for beginners

Salmon Fishing for beginners
The exciting sport of salmon fishing offers even beginners an opportunity to do something that they can talk about for many years to come. It does not matter if they catch the “big one” everytime they go out, because they will still have alot of fun in being a beginner at salmon fishing.
I will take this opportunity to offer some things for you to be mindful of as a beginner salmon fisherman.
You will learn about the various species of salmon available for you to catch depending on the location you are fishing at. The salmon is different from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The same can be said for various types of salmon in lakes in North America.
Many people choose to fish for salmon when they are running which is a term that refers to salmon returning to the river where they are from. Salmon always come back to where they were hatched so the fishing season to catch them will depend on where you are fishing at.
The most common salmon that our fished for are the King Salmon. They are also known as the black mouth and can average weighing between 25 to 60 pounds. The largest king salmon ever caught was in Alaska weighing 96 pounds.
Some will do fly fishing, while others would rather do bait fishing.
Fly fishing requires a 12-16 ft. graphite or fiberglass rod, fly reel and line. Bait fishing requires a 10 ft. spinning rod and bait caster reel with up to 20 lb. test line. This will need to be heavier if you are fishing for Chinnook.
For bait you will use various things including worms, plugs, flies and lures for fresh water salmon. For salt water salmon you can use lures, flies, crustaceans and streamers.
This is a few things to keep in mind if you are a beginner salmon fishermen. It is a great sport and one you are sure to get hooked on!
