Is there such thing as a waste of time?

Many people are quick to refer to something someone else enjoys as a waste of time. For example, someone might say that playing video games are a waste of time, whilst for others it may be a hobby. Same goes for anything, such as reading, fishing, sports etc.

So, my point is, if someone enjoys something and it brings them happiness (as long as it doesn’t harm them) can we ever rightfully call it a “waste of time?”

Only your own perception of “waste of time” Its purely subjective. Playing video games might be a waste of time for a priest, on the other hand going to church is a waste of time for the gaming programmer.

Daniel Ambrose answers:

Well 15 is a tough age to be and the best advice that someone can give you is to enjoy your youth but things like building such as going to a junk yard and maybe trying to get into and building cars or something that you can build from the ground up, and that can be both relieving and if you get good at it you can possibly turn that into a career one day, if your parents think that of you than that is terrible, but find something you enjoy, thats important and who knows you better than you, but good luck.

eventually, all bodies of water will connect, although, not directly. If you’ve ever looked at a map, you’ll probably notice that all of the oceans are connected.
And most lakes drain. Those that don’t and aren’t fed, will eventually evaporate and then be fed into the water system agian through rain-storms.

Casting Distance Related To Rod Length?

Hi,

I have two rods; One is about 6ft long (single piece) and the other is about 8ft (two piece). Both are rated up to 30lbs that can take up to 4oz line weight.

The 6-footer is very stiff from bottom to tip unlike the 8-footer which has a “flimsy” tip like most fishing rods.

Whenever I cast the 6-footer, I can try to throw it to hell but it’ll only go but so far. The 8-footer, however, is able to travel way further out. I’m not exactly sure how far out, wish I can find an accurate number, but I’m sure it’s far.

Questions are:
1. Does the length of the fishing rod make a difference in casting distance?

1a. If so (or not), what about the sinker weight? I usually use (and like) the tear drop 3oz. Friends use 5oz but it doesn’t sound like their rods are being cast out any further. To me, the heavier the sinkers, the more strength it requires to cast, equal less distance.

2. Hook sizes: I usually like size 2 hooks. I figured that if it’s small enough for a fish to swallow it along with the bait that’s on it, the likely it is the hook will set somewhere in its mouth. My friend bought 4/0 and 5/0 size hooks but I don’t have anywhere as much success. I want to catch 20lbers and up Rockfish or whatever would take the bait even though I never caught anything anywhere close to that number, would a bigger hook size play a key role?

For answering purposes, 2010 is basically my first year ever fishing (new hobby now). I have caught numerous White Perches, Spots, Black Drum, Red Drum, 3 Puffers, a few Horseshoe crabs and I missed out reeling in a what looked to be a 15″to 18″ Rockfish (it had jumped out the waters about 20 or so yards out, the hook snapped off…). I think I got patted down good is casting, now I just want to cast out further and go for gold…. gold being 20lbers and up.

Daniel Ambrose answers:

Assume the reel is 1.5 feet from the butt of each rod. That gives your 6 ft rod a tip length of 4.5 feet, and the 8 footer a tip length of 6.5 feet. With the same casting motion, the tip of the longer rod (and your casting weight) will be moving 6.5/4.5 times as fast, or about 1.4 times as fast. Thus, if everything else is equal, it will cast about 1.4 times as far.

The whippier tip on the longer rod will help you casting lighter weights, but it will also limit how much weight you can cast.

The sinker weight, up to a point, will increase your casting distance — that is, if the sinker is not so heavy that it overloads the rod, or so heavy that it cuts down on how hard you can cast (again, assuming all other factors are equal), the heavier weight will go further — just like you can throw a baseball farther than you can throw a tennis ball. I don’t think a 4 or 5 ounce sinker is heavy enough to limit how much force you can put into the cast, but if they don’t get you any more distance than a 3 ounce, only use them if you need the weight to hold the bait on the bottom in the current.

If you don’t need the 30 pound test, you might switch to 25 or 20 pound — or use braided line — as thinner line will cast farther. You should also make sure your reels are full — if they’re not full, that will cut your casting distance.

I fish on the west coast, so I’m not familiar with the fish you catch, but in general I match the hook to the size of the bait — if the hook is too small, it’ll get lost in the bait and I won’t hook the fish solidly (or at all), and if it’s too big, I won’t get bit in the first place. I’ve caught several tuna from 30 to 65 pounds on a size 2 hook (with a small anchovy bait), so you don’t necessarily need a big hook for a big fish.

How much do fishing boats owners pay per 1 ton of MGO & IFO fuel in the USA?

Those who have big fishing boats in the USA, how much they pay for MGO and IFO fuel? I wonder if the USA government stimulates such high fuel prices, or have any benefits for the fishing companies. I know that governments of Iceland and England provide benefits to fishing companies that spend huge amounts of money to fuel their fishing vessels, otherwise the companies would go out of business. Is there anything like that in the USA?

Daniel Ambrose answers:

During the Opener, the water is still going to be mighty cold- esp this year.

#1. I’d suggest looking for warmer water in the N-NE corner of the lake. (The N-NE corner of most lakes will generally be the first section to warm up.)

#2. Try looking for the first break or shelf off of a major flat.

I’d suggest trolling with 1/8 OZ Black Jighead’s & Fathead Minnow’s. This time of year, Walleye will usually be either on the first break OR in the shallows looking to spawn.

Make sure to use Fluorocarbon leaders or line- the water will be very clear.

You can also try trolling Rapala Taildancers- http://www.basspro.com/Rapala-Tail-Dancer-Hardbait/product/44351/-853931

Either apply a fish attractant or thinly coat your hard lures with this, (it helps to mask scent and will draw more strikes)- http://www.basspro.com/FishSticks-Lure-Enhancer-Natural-Fish-Attractant/product/10217609/-1732493

If the Walleye won’t comply try fishing for Crappie & Bluegill (using Crappie Minnows) or 1/32 black Marabou Jigs. Usually, Crappie/Bluegill should be fairly easy to catch this time of year and are an excellent fish to target for family’s and children.

Good luck!

Daniel Ambrose answers:

Sounds like you need more info than I could type.

(lol)

Your best bet is to go to http://www.floridasportsman.com and read some posts and info there. Florida Sportsman magazine is the “In-fisherman” of Florida.

Here is a link to a great book written by famous Floridian writer Vic Dunaway. It has a ton of basic info on how to rig and angle for the myriad fish Florida has to offer- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0936240148/idahofishnhuntA/

For general Offshore??- http://www.amazon.com/Fish-Florida-Saltwater-Luck-Foolproof/dp/088415002X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239679703&sr=1-1

Asking how to catch Mahi or Sails is like asking how to catch Musky, Bass and Walleye in the Great Lakes.

Each species (Walleye, Bass and Musky) will have a perfect technique for that particular lake, species, time of year, Etc.

You would be wise to go to www.floridasportsman.com and ask on The Forum about trading a trip with any knowledgeable anglers. Tell them your problem and see if anyone might want to schedule a trip offshore together. That would be the quickest way for you to learn how to PRODUCTIVELY fish Offshore. You would be surprised how many great offshore anglers will divulge all their info if simply asked…..

At the very least check out the “How To” section.

Hope this helps? Good luck.

Walleye Fishing??????????????

OK I’m going fishing for walleye this weekend on Oneida lake. Its not a very deep lake but its one of the best in the country for walleye. The best place to catch them is supposed to be near these two islands in the middle of the lake. Its about 20 to 30 ft deep. I went there last week and there was tons of people fishing there and they were catching them like crazy. But i didn’t catch one. I was jigging and had a worm at the end of the jig. How do i catch these walleye? What bait is best? Should i use deep diving crank baits or troll with a spinner or keep jigging? I need techniques and tips. Also, any one who has every fished Oneida lake in New York any tips or hot spots? Thanks!

Daniel Ambrose answers:

Walleye can be hard to catch. What they like around my house is a couple things. They usually run about 27 feet…. A good setup is a crawler harness trailing about 6 feet behind a bottom bouncer. Troll it about 1.5 mph and see what you get. Another good way to catch them is with a lure called a “hot-n-tot” they are a really deep running crank bait. Put that about 8 feet behind a bottom bouncer and troll about the same speed. If you are using jigs use either a green, pink, orange, or red jig head. Another great lure is called a “erie deery” they have a goofy shaped weight with a blade spinner and a long hook on the back. Take a crawler and put it on the hook. Cast it out as far as you can and then let it sink to the bottom. Once on the bottom, Give it decent “yanks” and then let it settle to the bottom again and repeat.

Those are the best methods I have found. They like salty things…so maybe get some power bait or eggs…..All you have to do is try things out and best of luck!

Are there bluegill or pumpkin seed in the lake? If there are, catch one that is not too huge and hook it right behind the dorsal fin in the tail, and throw it out on a slip sinker rig. Use an appropriate sized circle or octopus hook. If there aren’t, you could use chunks of other baitfish but flathead prefer living prey. You might want to go to the deeper pools in the day and at night try the shallows.

MYSTERY CATFISH IN POND!!!??

i have been fishing in this pond for a while never seen a catfish before… but i think it was recently restocked with some. i saw this huge catfish come to the surface. i mean it was huge!!!!! i think it about 3 feet in length. and i also saw one about 2 feet but cant catch it. i use chicken livers every time and i get no bites and usually catch a turtle. but i know they can be caught on chicken livers because i know someone who has done it in the pond. but i want to know what kind of catfish it is likely to be so i know what it likes to eat. i was initially thinking it was a channel catfish but i dont think they can get that big…from what i saw of it was gray so now i am thinking it maybe a flathead but im not sure. SO WAT DO U THINK THE TYPE OF CATFISH IS?

Daniel Ambrose answers:

Probably a grass carp, or very big channel catfish.

Pond channels can grow very big, very fast if they have an unlimited supply of forage food. If there are a lot of bluegill or crappie in the pond, then one could likely get that big no problem.

On the other hand, grass carp are very common in that size you described, they may also look gray while under water.

Any good ideas for a children’s book title?

I’m writing this short children‘s book for a class project. It’s about two siblings, Robbie( 10 years old) and Lucy(6 years old). They’re going to summer camp and when it comes time to start making friends, Robbie actually sees all the kids as strange animals with mixed bodies. i.e: a lizard with the head of a duck, a fish with the head of a pig, a cat with the head of a horse etc. He sees the kids like this because he judged them before getting to know them and recongnizes they’re differences as strange and unusual. Lucy though, sees the children as children because she is younger and more innocent and never judged the kids before getting to know them. Towards the end of the story, he starts to talk to the kids more and gets to know them. He learns that they have similar hobbies and interests after all .The “animals” begin to change and transform (in Robbie’s eyes) to regular kids again. He then learns to never judge people before you get to know them.

I finished the story but i just can’t think of a title!! Please help!!! thankss

What can I give to a family at a funeral besides flowers and/or food?

The father of a very good family friend passed away yesterday. The initial discussion was to do a nice floral arrangement, as they have done that in the past for my family. However, I just don’t want to spend $75 on a bouquet that will die. And I’m not a fan of silk arrangements either.

The family won’t need food… they are active in a lot of groups that have already offered to provide meals for a few weeks.

There is no mention of providing a donation to a charity, so that’s out.

The man’s hobbies included oil painting; woodworking; fishing; watching his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandson’s athletic events; basketball; decorating for Christmas; and working in his yard.

Any suggestions on something we could do that would be more long-lasting and memorable (for his family, not for our gift).
I appreciate the suggestions so far… keep in mind the budget is around $75 or so.

I like the bush/tree idea.

If you don’t want to do a flower arrangement to send to the wake, it’s usually traditional to send a PLANT instead (not flowers). You can find BEAUTIFUL peace lilies online. They’re really durable, and don’t take a green thumb to take care of. They’re also beautiful.

You can also send a fruit basket instead of sending “food”.

Really anything you do will be appreciated. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. I would probably go with the plant.

Have you tried asking the South Carolina Department of Conservation?
I think that would be a good place to start and get free information.
You might also try a outdoor clothing store or a place like Wal-Mart.
You might need to get a fishing license also.

What are the basics an amateur boater needs to know?

I’m thinking about buying a small leisure/fishing boat next spring for our wedding anniversary, and have never been boating much except for an occasional rented kayak, jet ski, or canoe on vacation. My husband and I think it would be fun to take up the hobby of fishing together, and I really like the idea of owning a sailboat or sail/rowboat just for leisure sailing. I’m not looking for something that requires a lot of maintenance like a party barge or speed boat. I’d actually prefer just a row boat, for leisure sailing or fishing.

Is sailboating difficult to learn? Could I figure it out myself? Would a sail boat work well as a fishing boat? Where could I find a good affordable one in Missouri for under $400? What kind of boat maintenance should I expect to keep on top of?

Thanks so much!

My reccomendation is to get some basic boaters insurance before you take any marine vehicle out! New boaters, as like other types of vehicles, are more at risk than experienced boaters. My insurance for a 18 foot bay boat is only about 25 bucks a month, and is well worth it. Medical coverage should take care of any injuries that occur.

Also, get a boaters emergency kit, any marine shop should have something like this.

Get a radio, cb, or make sure you have cell phone coverage…but have a way to contact or be contacted while on water.

Dont drink while boating !! I have seen 3 people killed because of drunk boating here where I live!!

Familiarize yourself with boats, terminology, and marine rules and laws!

400 dollars wont get you much…maybe a dingy…lol

Need Something to Look Forward to, a New Hobby Maybe?

I have quite a bit of spare time after work during the week and then on weekends. I want to find something to do but not sure what. I’ll give you a little background…

- I work 40 hours a week, 8.30am-5pm weekdays.
- I train for triathlons so during the week I’m quite tired from this, so no big physical exercise hobbies thanks.
- I like fishing but only enjoy it on a boat, which I don’t have access to, I’ve tried it off rocks and stuff but don’t like it.
- I play a bit of golf, but I’m generally so tired and sore from triathlon training.
- I used to grow vegetables at home but our new house doesn’t have any room for it.
- I want to learn spanish, but don’t know if it’s fun or not. This will just be a part time thing anyways.

Basically I’m looking for a personal type hobby that I can do myself, generally at home but don’t mind travelling a little bit to get there. Don’t really want to join a big group or anything, and maybe make a little bit of money out of my hobby if possible but not a big deal.
Maybe a bit of travel to places? I don’t have much spare money though.

How many of you fear/hate lightning? How can you when it helps the atmosphere? That’s what being “Green” is?

If you are a “Green earth” bleeding heart, are you scared of, or hate lightning? If you do hate lightning but claim to want what’s best for the Earth, how can you hate lightning?

It is now known that lightning helps greatly to fertilize the soil. Eighty percent of the atmosphere or sky is nitrogen, an essential food for plants. About 22,000,000 tons of this nutrient hovers over each square mile of the earth. But as it exists in the atmosphere nitrogen it is unusable by plants. Before plants can take life from it, it must undergo a series of chemical changes, like our digestive system. Lightning in the sky touches off this series of changes. Air particles are made white-hot by lightning. Under this intense heat, the nitrogen combines with the oxygen in the air to form nitrogen oxides that are soluble in water. The rain dissolves the oxides and carries them down to earth as dilute nitric acid. Reaching the earth, the nitric acid reacts with the minerals of the earth, there to become nitrates on which plants can feed. Since plants can feed and live, man and animals can feed on plants and live!

Here’s another important piece of info about lightning:

The sides of the Earth are enclosed by radiation. The lighting strikes help clear some of that up so we do not get a deadly dose of it! Lighting is VERY IMPORTANT for us to be able to live on this planet.
When water evaporates from the surface of earth from lakes, land, river, streams, ocean, ponds and from trees by transpiration, this rises into the atmosphere in the form of a gas by convection. As this warm air rises, cold air moves in and meets the warm moist air which causes the warm air to rise rapidly forming large, dense, tall towers of anvil shaped cumulonimbus clouds commonly known as thunderstorm clouds. Formed at a height between 15,000 to 25,000 feet above sea level, the water droplets are carried upward to a much cooler region until some of them are converted into ice (snow) particles.

During the thunderstorm, precipitation particles (water droplets and ice crystals) in the higher region of the clouds will then collide with each other as they rub against each other in strong currents of air. This strong air current here is due to the ascending (rising) and descending air in the updrafts and downdrafts of the storm (click here for diagram). As a result, this colliding and rubbing of many water droplets and ice crystals creates a static electrical charge. Thus, causing areas of negative and positive charge to develop within the thunderstorm. Some of the ice (snow) crystals and water droplets will therefore become positively charged (+ plus sign), while others become negatively charged( – minus sign). The positive and negative electrical charges in the cloud then separate from each other where the positively charged snow crystals moves to the upward top section of the storm cloud while the heavier negative charge ice crystal and water droplets drops to the lower section of the cloud.

When the difference in the charges at the lower section of the cloud becomes large enough, whereby reaching a certain strength, a giant “spark” occurs causing the flow of electricity (electrical energy ) to be released through the air to another point that has an opposite charge. This release of electrical energy is called a leader stroke which may be from one cloud to another (Cloud-to-Cloud Lightning) or from one section of the cloud to another (In-Cloud Lightning) or from cloud to the ground (Cloud-to-Ground Lightning). Once a connection is made and the path is complete, a surge of electrical current moves in the opposite direction back to the cloud and produce a flash of light which we call lightning. This process is called the main stroke.

So, if you hate lightning, you obviously hate the earth. Or are you just an ignorant jerk who believes in Global Warming?
ROFL Carol you got two followers to mirror you.

One: Trees give off a very low amount of Oxygen. Sea Algae gives 70-80% of our oxygen.

Two: Lightning rarely strikes trees. You only hear, read about it because when lightning strikes a field or the ocean no one reports it.

Lightning always tries to take the easiest path to the ground. SOMETIMES but not very often do trees get in the way.

It’s nice to know that some people think knowledge about nitrates are the only important piece of information to take from this. Lot of libtard demoncrats are around today, though. Must’ve gotten a call from their friends about yesterday.
And General, I disagree. If you fear lightning, that is completely illogical considering its frequency and all the details that go along with it. It makes you less of an environmentalist because it absorbs people in an emotion instead of dealing with a problem in a more thought out, rational way. But I give you a thumbs up because, yeah, you can’t really get rid of lightning.

Fearing destructive forces in nature does not make one any less of an environmentalist. Unless you know of anyone who wants to do away with lightning, that is.

How long does it take water to circulate throughout the earth’s ocean currents?

Not counting the rivers and streams of the water cycle, I was curious how long approx it takes water to travel around the earth. (I figure calculating speed * length of each current should give me a really ballpark figure – but I can’t find those initial figures)

Convection currents usually take 1 year to travel their entire course which is from the north/south to the equator then back again.
